Rash: What to Do and When to See a Doctor|Skin Symptoms and Itching During Travel

■Symptoms

A rash refers to skin changes such as redness, bumps, blisters, or itching. It can spread to the arms, legs, trunk, face, or the entire body. Symptoms may also include itching, fever, sore throat, or fatigue. During travel, rashes may occur due to climate changes, food, infections, or insect bites. Most cases are mild, but in rare situations, serious infections or allergic reactions may be involved.

■Causes

Common causes may include:

  • Infectious diseases such as measles, chickenpox, or shingles
  • Severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis
  • Drug allergies or contact dermatitis
  • Insect bites or sunburn
  • Skin irritation caused by sweat or dryness

If rash is accompanied by fever, difficulty breathing, blisters, or rapidly spreading skin changes, early medical evaluation is recommended as a precaution.

■When to See a Doctor

Seek medical care immediately if:

  • You have difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • You have a high fever
  • The rash spreads rapidly
  • Your lips or face become swollen
  • You develop blisters or severe pain
  • You feel confused or less alert

You may monitor your condition if:

  • You only have mild itching
  • The affected area is limited
  • Symptoms are gradually improving
  • Daily activities are still possible

However, because fatigue and environmental changes during travel may worsen symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended if symptoms continue.

■What to Do

Caution: If a rash is accompanied by fever, measles may be the cause. As measles cannot be assessed at a general clinic, please call a hospital specializing in infectious diseases before visiting.

  • Keep the affected area clean
  • Avoid scratching the skin
  • Wear non-irritating clothing
  • Stay well hydrated

If you have fever, difficulty breathing, or rapidly spreading rash, please seek medical attention promptly.
