Weight Loss: Causes, Self-Care, and When to See a Doctor | Should You Be Concerned About Sudden Weight Loss During Travel?
■Symptoms
Weight loss refers to an unintended decrease in body weight. While it may result from changes in diet or physical activity, it can also be caused by an underlying medical condition.
You may notice that you are losing weight despite eating normally, have a reduced appetite, feel tired more easily, or find that your clothes have become looser. During travel, temporary weight loss may occur due to changes in environment, fatigue, jet lag, or different eating habits.
In many cases, the change is temporary. However, rapid or unexplained weight loss accompanied by other symptoms may indicate an underlying illness.
Causes
Possible causes include:
- Infectious diseases or other serious systemic illnesses
- Cancer (malignant tumors)
- Endocrine disorders such as hyperthyroidism or diabetes
- Gastrointestinal diseases or conditions that impair nutrient absorption
- Reduced food intake, stress, or fatigue
During travel, infections or gastrointestinal illnesses may lead to weight loss. However, unexplained weight loss should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
When to Seek Medical Care
Seek Medical Attention Promptly If You Have:
- Rapid or ongoing unexplained weight loss
- High fever, severe abdominal pain, or severe diarrhea
- Bloody stools or vomiting blood
- Shortness of breath or chest pain
- Confusion or altered consciousness
You May Monitor Your Symptoms If:
- Your weight loss is likely due to eating less during travel
- You otherwise feel well and can eat and drink adequately
- Your symptoms are improving
- Your daily activities are not significantly affected
However, if your weight loss continues without a clear explanation, we recommend seeing a doctor as a precaution.
Self-Care
- Maintain adequate hydration and nutrition
- Eat small, easily digestible meals
- Get enough rest and sleep
- Monitor your weight regularly
- Avoid excessive dieting or strenuous exercise
If you experience rapid weight loss or severe illness, do not rely on self-care alone. Please seek medical attention promptly.
