Heatstroke: What to Do and When to See a Doctor|Heat-Related Illness During Travel
■Symptoms
Heatstroke is a condition in which the body cannot regulate its temperature properly due to high temperatures, causing an imbalance of fluids and electrolytes such as salt. Common symptoms include dizziness, headache, nausea, fatigue, excessive sweating, and muscle cramps. In severe cases, symptoms may include confusion, poor responsiveness, or seizures. During travel, heatstroke can occur when people are not accustomed to the heat or spend long periods outdoors.
■Causes
Common causes may include:
- Prolonged activity in hot and humid environments
- Dehydration or salt deficiency
- Long hours of sightseeing or outdoor travel
- Alcohol consumption or lack of sleep
- Reduced ability to regulate body temperature in older adults, children, or people with underlying medical conditions
Most cases are mild, but severe heatstroke can lead to impaired consciousness and other serious complications.
■When to See a Doctor
Seek medical care immediately if:
- You feel confused or less alert
- You cannot drink fluids
- Severe headache or nausea continues
- You respond poorly when spoken to
- You have seizures or difficulty walking
You may monitor your condition if:
- You have mild dizziness or fatigue
- Symptoms improve after resting in a cool place
- You are able to drink fluids
However, because dehydration can worsen quickly during travel, medical evaluation is recommended if symptoms continue.
■What to Do
- Move to a cool place
- Loosen clothing and cool the body
- Drink fluids and electrolytes
- Cool the neck, armpits, and groin areas
- Avoid continuing physical activity
If there is impaired consciousness or difficulty drinking fluids, early emergency medical care should be considered.
