Sneezing: Self-Care Tips and When to See a Doctor | Nasal Symptoms and Allergies During Travel

Symptoms

Sneezing is a natural protective reflex that helps expel foreign particles and irritants from the nose. It may occur only a few times or happen repeatedly in succession.

Sneezing may be accompanied by a runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, or throat irritation. During travel, triggers may include pollen, dust, climate changes, or infectious illnesses acquired in crowded places.

In most cases, sneezing is mild and temporary. However, it may occasionally be associated with infections or severe allergic reactions.

■Causes

Possible causes include:

• Infections such as COVID-19 and influenza
• Severe allergic reactions
• The common cold (acute upper respiratory tract infection)
• Irritation from pollen, dust, or animal dander
• Nasal irritation caused by temperature changes or dry air

If sneezing is accompanied by fever or respiratory symptoms, an infection may be involved, and medical consultation is recommended as a precaution.

■When to Seek Medical Attention

【Seek Medical Attention Promptly If You:】

• Experience shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Have a persistent high fever
• Develop swelling of the face or lips
• Experience severe fatigue
• Have chest pain or impaired consciousness

【You May Monitor Your Symptoms If:】

• Sneezing is your only symptom and you otherwise feel well
• Symptoms are improving within a short period
• You are able to eat and drink normally
• Daily activities are not significantly affected

However, travel-related fatigue and environmental changes may worsen symptoms. If symptoms persist, we recommend seeking medical advice as a precaution.

■Self-Care Tips

• Get adequate rest
• Stay well hydrated
• Wear a mask and avoid known irritants
• Prevent excessive dryness indoors
• Avoid exposure to suspected allergens whenever possible

If using over-the-counter medications, follow the recommended dosage and instructions.
