Cough: What to Do and When to See a Doctor|Cough and Respiratory Symptoms During Travel
■Symptoms
Coughing is a protective reflex that occurs when the airways are irritated. There are different types of coughs, including dry coughs, coughs with mucus, and coughs that worsen at night. Symptoms may be accompanied by fever, sore throat, shortness of breath, chest pain, or fatigue. During travel, coughs may occur due to temperature changes, fatigue, or infections acquired in crowded places. Most cases are mild, but in rare situations, serious heart or lung conditions may be involved.
■Causes
Common causes may include:
- Heart failure or pulmonary edema
- Respiratory or circulatory conditions such as pneumothorax or pulmonary embolism
- Bronchitis, asthma, or COPD
- Infections such as pneumonia, COVID-19, or influenza
- Airway irritation caused by acid reflux, allergies, or dry air
If cough is accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, or bloody sputum, early medical evaluation is recommended as a precaution.
■When to See a Doctor
Seek medical care immediately if:
- You have shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- High fever continues
- You have chest pain
- You cough up blood
- Breathing becomes difficult when lying down
- You feel confused or less alert
- Your lips appear bluish or purple
You may monitor your condition if:
- You only have a mild cough
- You are able to drink fluids
- Symptoms are gradually improving
- Daily activities are still possible
However, because fatigue and dehydration during travel may worsen symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended if symptoms continue.
■What to Do
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Avoid dry indoor environments
- Rest and avoid overexertion
- Avoid smoking and airway irritants
If you have shortness of breath, chest pain, or high fever, please seek medical attention promptly.
