Fatigue: Self-Care Tips and When to See a Doctor | Tiredness and Exhaustion During Travel

Symptoms

Fatigue is a condition in which you feel physically drained, unable to recover your energy, or lacking motivation to carry out daily activities. In some cases, symptoms may persist even after adequate rest.

During travel, fatigue may occur due to long-distance travel, jet lag, lack of sleep, hot weather, or unfamiliar surroundings. It may also be accompanied by fever, headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, or palpitations.

Most cases are related to temporary physical exhaustion. However, infections, cardiovascular conditions, or other medical illnesses may occasionally be involved.

■Causes

Possible causes include:

• Infections such as sepsis, pneumonia, COVID-19, or influenza
• Cardiovascular conditions such as heart failure or arrhythmias
• Heat-related illness or severe dehydration
• Anemia or endocrine disorders (such as thyroid disease)
• Sleep deprivation, jet lag, physical fatigue, or stress

Many cases are related to fatigue or environmental changes. However, underlying medical conditions may be present if fatigue is accompanied by a high fever or respiratory symptoms.

■When to Seek Medical Attention

【Seek Medical Attention Promptly If You:】

• Have a persistent high fever
• Experience shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Have chest pain or severe palpitations
• Feel confused or unusually drowsy
• Are unable to drink enough fluids
• Feel so weak that walking becomes difficult

【You May Monitor Your Symptoms If:】

• Fatigue is likely related to travel
• You are able to stay well hydrated
• Symptoms are gradually improving with rest
• You can perform normal daily activities

However, dehydration or infections may sometimes be hidden causes during travel. If symptoms persist, we recommend seeking medical advice as a precaution.

■Self-Care Tips

• Get adequate rest
• Maintain sufficient fluid and food intake
• Ensure adequate sleep
• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
• Avoid strenuous sightseeing or exercise

If fatigue is accompanied by a high fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain, please seek medical attention promptly.
