Wheezing: What to Do and When to See a Doctor|Breathing Symptoms With Wheezing During Travel
■Symptoms
Wheezing is a condition in which you hear a “wheezing” or “whistling” sound while breathing. It may be accompanied by shortness of breath, coughing, or a feeling of chest tightness. The sound is often more noticeable when breathing out and may worsen at night or after exercise. During travel, symptoms may occur due to temperature changes, fatigue, infections, pollen, dust, or other irritants. Most cases are mild, but in rare situations, serious respiratory diseases or allergic reactions may be involved.
■Causes
Common causes may include:
- Asthma attacks or severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- Airway infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or COVID-19
- COPD or chronic respiratory diseases
- Airway obstruction caused by accidental inhalation of a foreign object
- Airway irritation from pollen, dust, or smoking
If symptoms are accompanied by difficulty breathing, changes in lip color, or fever, early medical evaluation is recommended as a precaution because symptoms may become severe.
■When to See a Doctor
Seek medical care immediately if:
- You feel short of breath even at rest
- Conversation becomes difficult
- Your lips or face appear bluish or purple
- You have chest pain or a high fever
- Your breathing is rapid or labored
- You feel confused or less alert
You may monitor your condition if:
- Symptoms improve with rest
- You are able to drink fluids
- Daily activities are still possible
However, because fatigue and dehydration during travel may worsen symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended if symptoms continue.
■What to Do
- Rest and avoid overexertion
- Stay in a well-ventilated area
- Avoid smoking and airway irritants
- Drink plenty of fluids
If you have difficulty breathing or changes in lip color, please seek medical attention promptly.
