Runny Nose (Nasal Discharge): Self-Care Tips and When to See a Doctor | Nasal Symptoms and Infections During Travel

Symptoms

A runny nose (nasal discharge) is a condition in which clear or colored fluid is discharged from the nose. Nasal discharge can vary from thin and watery to thick and sticky.

It may be accompanied by sneezing, nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, or fever. During travel, it can be triggered by climate changes, infections acquired in crowded places, or irritants such as pollen and dust.

Most cases are mild and improve naturally. However, in some cases, infections or sinusitis may be involved.

■Causes

Possible causes include:

• Infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and influenza
• Acute sinusitis (sinus infection)
・Severe allergic reaction

• Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
• The common cold (acute upper respiratory tract infection)
• Irritation of the nasal lining caused by temperature changes, dry air, or dust

If a runny nose is accompanied by a high fever or respiratory symptoms, an infection may be involved. Medical consultation is recommended as a precaution.

■When to Seek Medical Attention

【Seek Medical Attention Promptly If You:】

• Have a persistent high fever
• Experience shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Have severe facial pain or swelling
• Develop a severe headache
• Experience confusion or impaired consciousness

【You May Monitor Your Symptoms If:】

• You only have clear nasal discharge
• Symptoms are gradually improving
• You can eat and drink normally
• Daily activities are not significantly affected

However, travel-related fatigue and environmental changes may prolong symptoms. If symptoms persist, we recommend seeking medical advice as a precaution.
