Itchy Eyes: Self-Care Tips and When to See a Doctor | Eye Symptoms and Allergies During Travel
■Symptoms
Itchy eyes are a condition in which you experience persistent discomfort that makes you want to rub your eyes. Symptoms may affect one eye or both eyes.
Itchy eyes may be accompanied by redness, watery eyes, a foreign body sensation, swollen eyelids, or eye discharge. During travel, symptoms can be triggered by pollen, dust, climate changes, dry air, contact lens use, or infections acquired in crowded places.
Most cases are mild. However, infections, eye diseases, or allergic reactions may occasionally be involved.
■Causes
Possible causes include:
• Keratitis (corneal inflammation) and severe eye infections
• Infectious conjunctivitis (viral or bacterial)
• Allergic conjunctivitis and allergic reactions
• Irritation or dryness related to contact lens use
• Eye irritation caused by pollen, dust, or dry air
If symptoms are accompanied by decreased vision or severe eye pain, urgent eye conditions may be involved. Medical consultation is recommended as a precaution.
■When to Seek Medical Attention
【Seek Medical Attention Promptly If You:】
• Have severe eye pain
• Experience sudden vision loss or blurred vision
• Have significant redness or swelling
• Become unusually sensitive to light
• Develop a fever
• Notice worsening symptoms while wearing contact lenses
【You May Monitor Your Symptoms If:】
• You only have mild itching
• Symptoms are gradually improving
• There are no changes in your vision
• Daily activities are not significantly affected
However, travel-related fatigue and environmental changes may worsen symptoms. If symptoms persist, we recommend seeking medical advice as a precaution.
■Self-Care Tips
