Weight Gain: Causes, Self-Care, and When to See a Doctor | Watch for Sudden Weight Gain and Swelling During Travel

Symptoms

Weight gain refers to an increase in body weight over a short period or gradually over time. While it is often caused by changes in diet or physical activity, it may also be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

You may notice sudden weight gain, swelling of the legs or face, increased shortness of breath, or fatigue. During travel, temporary weight gain may occur due to changes in eating habits, reduced physical activity, long flights, or jet lag.

In most cases, weight gain is related to lifestyle changes. However, in some cases, it may be associated with heart disease, kidney disease, or hormonal disorders.

Causes

Possible causes include:

  • Conditions that cause fluid retention, such as heart failure or kidney failure
  • Hormonal disorders such as hypothyroidism
  • Diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases
  • Changes in diet and lack of physical activity
  • Stress, insufficient sleep, or medication side effects

Although many cases are related to lifestyle changes, rapid weight gain or swelling may indicate an underlying medical condition.

When to Seek Medical Care

Seek Medical Attention Promptly If You Have:

  • Rapid weight gain over several days
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Significant swelling of the legs or entire body
  • Confusion or altered consciousness

You May Monitor Your Symptoms If:

  • Your weight gain is likely related to increased food intake during travel
  • You otherwise feel well
  • You are able to carry out your normal daily activities
  • Your symptoms are stable or improving

However, if your weight continues to increase or is accompanied by swelling or breathing difficulties, we recommend seeing a doctor as a precaution.

Self-Care

  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Engage in regular physical activity
  • Get adequate sleep
  • Limit excessive salt and alcohol intake
  • Avoid remaining in the same position for extended periods

If you experience rapid weight gain or significant swelling, do not rely on self-care alone. Please seek medical attention promptly.
