■Symptoms
Red eye occurs when the blood vessels in the white part of the eye become enlarged, causing the eye to appear red. It may affect one eye or both eyes.
Symptoms may be accompanied by itching, watery eyes, eye discharge, a foreign body sensation, or swollen eyelids. During travel, triggers may include pollen, dust, dry air, contact lens use, or infections.
Most cases are mild. However, eye infections or conditions that may affect vision can occasionally be involved.
■Causes
Possible causes include:
• Severe eye infections such as keratitis (corneal infection) or endophthalmitis
• Infectious conjunctivitis (viral or bacterial)
• Urgent eye conditions such as acute angle-closure glaucoma
• Allergic conjunctivitis
• Irritation or dryness related to contact lens use
If symptoms are accompanied by decreased vision or severe eye pain, prompt medical evaluation is recommended, as a serious eye condition may be present.

• There is no change in vision
• Daily activities are not significantly affected
