Sore Throat: Treatment, When to See a Doctor, and Infections Travelers Should Know About

Symptoms

A sore throat is a condition characterized by pain, irritation, or discomfort in the throat. Symptoms may vary and can include pain when swallowing, a burning sensation, or a dry and scratchy feeling in the throat.

A sore throat may be accompanied by fever, cough, runny nose, hoarseness, and fatigue. During travel, it may be triggered by climate changes, long-distance transportation, dry environments, or exposure to infections in crowded places.

Most cases are mild and improve naturally. However, in rare cases, serious infections or airway-related illnesses may be involved.

■ Causes

Possible causes include:

• Serious infections requiring urgent attention, such as a peritonsillar abscess or epiglottitis
• Viral infections such as COVID-19 and influenza
• Bacterial infections such as streptococcal (strep throat) infection
• The common cold (acute upper respiratory tract infection)
• Irritation caused by dry air, smoking, or allergies

Most sore throats are caused by viral infections. However, if symptoms are accompanied by a high fever or breathing difficulties, a more serious infection may be present.

■ When to Seek Medical Care

【Seek Medical Attention Promptly If You Have】

• Difficulty breathing
• Inability to swallow even saliva
• Persistent high fever
• Significant swelling of the neck
• Difficulty speaking or sudden hoarseness
• Confusion or altered consciousness

【You May Monitor Your Symptoms If】

• Mild throat pain only
• You can drink fluids and eat normally
• Symptoms are gradually improving
• Daily activities are not significantly affected

However, because fatigue and dehydration during travel may worsen symptoms, we recommend seeking medical advice if symptoms persist.

■ Self-Care

• Get plenty of rest
• Drink fluids regularly
• Prevent dry indoor air when possible
• Avoid alcohol and smoking
• Choose foods that are gentle on the throat

If you experience difficulty breathing, a high fever, or are unable to maintain adequate fluid intake, please seek medical attention promptly.
